Workshop
Overview
Our Introduction to Becoming
a Therapy Dog Team Workshop is offered several times per
year. (Visit our workshop schedule
page to find out when the next series of classes will be held).
It consists of three (3) weekly session designed to educate the
human companion and expose obedience trained dogs to environments
similar to those that volunteers may visit.
It is important to note
that dogs must be able to sit, down, stay and heel on the handlers command. Dogs that jump up, nip/mouth are not appropriate for therapy dog work. This is not an obedience training and we do not teach obedience
skills. Dogs and handlers are expected to demonstrate these skills
before attending this workshop.
An overview of disabilities including
communication, mobility and social/emotional issues will be addressed.
Dogs will be exposed to medical equipment such as wheelchairs,
walkers, compressors, etc. Dogs will refine and practice their
obedience skills for use in a medical setting.
This workshop will center on the team achieving skills to pass the evaluation. Dogs and
handlers that pass are then able to become an active member of and may begin visiting. (Annual membership dues are $25).
